Historic restaurant in Belfast

The "McHughs Bar & Restaurant" in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is a historic establishment that prides itself on being the oldest surviving building in the city, built in 1711. Located in the historic heart of Belfast, it uniquely combines history with modern comfort. Originally constructed as a residence by the old Town Dock, it was transformed into a small pub between 1715 and 1725 and has since developed into a central gathering place. The building, which holds the status of a Grade-A Listed Building, underwent extensive renovations and expansions in the 1990s, incorporating the adjacent DuBarry's. The decor reflects this blend of old and new: rustic wooden beams and antique details meet contemporary elements, while artworks and artifacts by local artists adorn the space. Notably, the labyrinthine layout features various interconnected rooms, ranging from the lively main bar to cozy nooks that invite guests to linger.

Authentic Irish cuisine experience

Culinarily, "McHughs" represents authentic Irish cuisine with a focus on hearty, down-to-earth dishes. A highlight is the "Belfast Boxty," a traditional potato dish offered in various versions—such as with juicy steak or BBQ pulled pork—and is appreciated for its filling, flavorful quality. Equally popular is the "Hot Rock Steak," served on a hot granite stone, allowing guests to cook their meat to their liking right at the table—an experience that impresses both in taste and visually. For seafood lovers, the "Seafood Chowder" provides a creamy, flavorful option served with fresh bread. The kitchen places great emphasis on local ingredients and traditional preparation, underscoring the authentic character of the dishes. The dessert selection, including a classic "Sticky Toffee Pudding," rounds out the offerings for a sweet finish.

Best bars in Belfast

"McHughs" is not just a restaurant but also a vibrant bar with an extensive drink menu. Local beers and perfectly poured Guinness dominate, often praised by guests for its creaminess. The selection is complemented by a variety of Irish whiskeys and wines that pair ideally with the hearty dishes. The basement area of the establishment regularly transforms into a stage for live music, featuring bands and DJs playing everything from traditional Irish tunes to modern hits—an aspect that particularly shapes the atmosphere on weekends and often invites spontaneous dancing. In addition to the main bar, there is a separate restaurant area that provides a quieter setting for a leisurely meal, as well as private rooms for celebrations.

Lovely little pub to visit in the town with a nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Reasonable and average prices and plenty of seating inside and outside. Nice place to come with friends.

Nice pub with nice atmosphere...... However, I went there for a beer and couldn't be more disappointed. Fully in the pocket of the big British multinational, Diagio. Only Diagio beer on sale, NO choice whatsoever, not one local Belfast beer, or indeed any craft beer on sale. such a shame😭
